Winter performed a complete renovation of this 80,000 square-foot elementary school on the west side of Atlanta. Winter also built a new school entrance and new bus drop-off canopy. This comprehensive renovation relocated exterior walls, reconfigured interior spaces, and replaced all of the existing stairwells to meet current building code requirements. Winter carried out reconfigurations in the classroom area to enlarge the classrooms and renovated passageways to reduce grade changes. The renovation also included installing new finishes for floors and walls. Winter achieved notable successes in value engineering for the project. Creative solutions that Winter proposed included rearranging interior stair locations in lieu of adding new building square footage and changing interior partitions from masonry to framed walls – both proposals yielded significant savings in unnecessary structure modifications. The front entry canopy was also re-engineered from structural steel to aluminum, providing an overall savings of $100,000 in the canopy alone.
