(October 28, 2015) Atlanta, GA – Meet Destany Arnold, Winter Construction’s newest team member. A senior at Atlanta Public School’s Crim High School, Destany is a participant of the Work-Based Learning (WBL) Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) in the Construction Career Pathway. As part of the YAP, she is getting work experience to be prepared for a high-skill occupation in construction, and is part of a growing pool of highly trained, technologically sophisticated young workers in Georgia.

Having the highest GPA in the Construction Career Pathway group and completing all three required construction-focused courses, as well as being the only student (male or female) to pass the construction pathways test, Destany is already blazing a trail. Her Career Pathways teacher at Crim, Richard Elder is impressed with Destany’s commitment to on-the-job learning and getting real-world experience while attaining her high school diploma. He says, “She has been with me since she started here at Crim, and she is taking advantage of all that the Work-Based Learning program has to offer. We are very proud of her.”

Not a stranger to the world of construction, Destany has experience as a project management intern at the McCarthy Building Company and as a facility management intern with the United States Department of the Interior. At Winter Construction, Destany is working on the Crawford Long Middle School project, gaining both field and office experience shadowing both the project engineer and the assistant superintendent. Through firsthand experience, she is learning about safety, reading drawings, writing Request for Inquiries (RFIs), and processing submittals.

While Destany is gaining value from this work experience and learning industry insights, Winter Construction is getting the chance to show our passion for teaching and giving back to the community. Carrie Campbell, Director of Education, Government, and Aviation at Winter, describes the company’s educational and service initiatives: “Our ongoing partnership with Atlanta Public Schools is part of Winter’s ongoing commitment to the communities we serve and work with. We love building as much as we love educating people about our construction management. The work-study programs are a perfect opportunity to do both. Our collaboration with the communities we work in is yet another aspect of being good experience builders.”
